Kochi, Mar 22 (ANI): Minister of State for External Affairs Shashi Tharoor on Sunday denied his involvement in bidding for Kochi based Indian Premier League (IPL) team, but accepted that he did facilitate and encourage the undertaking.

"Kochi making it through IPL is of national significance. I think all the associates of IPL will certainly give Kerala a sort of dynamism and energy, which I am sure, will inspire people. I am very happy about this," said Tharoor.

"My own role has been limited to blessing and encouraging this venture because I feel very strongly that Keralites in India and abroad need something like this. I think it will help in the transformation of Kerala and that is my spirit," he added.

Tharoor, however, claimed that he had no involvement with the Kochi bid.

Pune and Kochi were unveiled as the two new franchises for the fourth edition of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament.

The Sahara Group run by businessman Subrata Roy purchased the Pune team and Rendezvous Sports bought the Kochi team on Sunday for the fourth edition of the cash-rich Indian Premier League (IPL) tournament.

Five bidders took part in the bid for these two teams today.

Indian Premier League Commissioner Lalit Modi made the announcement that the Sahara Group has purchased the Pune team and Rendezvous Sports purchased the Kochi team.

It is reported that Sahara Group purchased the Pune team for Rs 1702 crores, while Rendezvous Sports bought the Kochi team for Rs 1533 crores.

Five bidders had lined up on Friday for submission of bids, to qualify for the auction, which took place today morning, a top BCCI said.
