MNREGA bringing momentum in financial inclusion of rural population: PM

New Delhi - The Prime Minister, Dr. Manmohan Singh, on Saturday said the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MNREGA) has brought momentum in the financial inclusion of the country's rural population.

Speaking on the occasion of the eighth MNREGA 'Divas Sammelan', Dr Singh said over four crore bank accounts have been opened under MNREGA and even more accounts have been opened in post offices.

"These accounts will help in implementing direct benefits transfer scheme to our rural population," he added.

UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi in her address said there is a need to check misutilisation of funds and corruption in MNREGA.

" MNREGA can play a big role in fulfilling dreams of second green revolution ," she said.
