Chandigarh (IANS) The income tax (IT) department Monday searched the lockers of former union minister of state for civil aviation Harmohan Dhawan's wife Satinder Dhawan and daughter Piya.

"We conducted a search operation of the lockers of Harmohan Dhawan's wife and daughter at Punjab National Bank in Sector 17, Chandigarh. Sleuths of our investigation wing had opened the lockers and made a list of the jewellery that was placed there," said a senior IT official, on condition of anonymity, here Monday.

"This search was part of our ongoing investigation in another case of tax evasion by Chandigarh-based cloth merchants," he said.

The cloth merchants, Gulatis, are close relatives of the Dhawan family.

The IT investigation team came from the neighbouring Panchkula town.

Dhawan, a Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, said that it was a normal search operation.

"There is nothing fishy in this search. They had opened the lockers in the presence of the owners and have found nothing objectionable. All the jewellery was already declared before the IT department," said Dhawan here Monday.
