Heavy downpour in Delhi, chaos on roads

Tuesday - Aug 24, 2010, 01:02pm (GMT+5.5)

New Delhi (IANS)- Incessant heavy rains Tuesday morning caused waterlogging at many places in Delhi, leading to traffic jams. Many Delhiites had a tough time navigating through flooded roads as they headed out to meet relatives on the occasion of Raksha Bandhan.

Traffic snarls worsened as the downpour increased, slowed the movement of vehicles to a crawl in several areas.

The Ring Road, the road from Qutub Minar metro station to Gurgaon, Rajghat, Mori Gate, Lajpat Nagar, Ashram, Vikas Marg and Badarpur were the worst hit by flooding and the resultant traffic chaos.

A total of 20.8 mm of rains were recorded from Monday morning till 8.30 a.m. Tuesday.

The met office predicted more rainfall in the day as well as during the week.

"The sky will be cloudy with rains through the day. One or two spells may be heavy. The rainfall is likely to continue in the coming days," a met official said.

"A low pressure circulation had earlier moved over Delhi from the Bay of Bengal, also bringing much rains," an official said.

The national capital has so far received nearly 686 mm of rain this monsoon, almost 40 percent above average.

The month of August alone has recorded 444 mm of rains so far - the highest in 10 years.

A marginal drop in the mercury was noted as the minimum temperature was a notch below average at 25.6 degrees Celsius Monday night.

The met office said the maximum temperature is likely to hover around 32 degrees Tuesday, while the minimum will be around 26 degrees.
