Sonia slams BJP in Uttarakhand for failing to fulfill its promises

Tehri - Slamming ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Uttarakhand for not fulfilling its promises, Congress President Sonia Gandhi has said that her party had drawn major plans for the township of Tehri for improving the conditions of the locals.

Addressing an election rally here on Tuesday, Gandhi said: "The conditions here are worsening . The BJP came in power here after offering gigantic promises but I want to ask you as to what happened to those promises? How many promises were fulfilled?"

"We are concerned about you. This is why it is mentioned in the Congress manifesto that the government would develop Tehri Dam area for tourist attraction. This will lead to livelihood for the local unemployed people," she said.

"A proper amount of foodgrains will also be provided to solve the problems of the families who had been displaced because of the dam. Steps will also be taken for the rehabilitation in terms of settlement and employment for the families affected by the building of the dam," she added.

Earlier, addressing an election rally in Roorkee, Gandhi asked people to oust the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) government from the state

"If you want to save the environment of Uttarakhand, its natural resources from being looted, if you want the common man to lead a happy and convenient life, if you want to get back your honour, rights and the real Uttarakhand back, then changing the Chief Minister is not the only way, you need to change the government as well."

Sonia Gandhi also claimed that whatever development is visible even now in Uttarakhand was carried out in past by the Congress.

"We have always taken special care of the development of Uttarakhand. Whatever development you see in the state is the work of the Congress government," she said.

The state's ruling BJP government has been marred by corruption charges that led to the eviction of Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank as Chief Minister. His post was taken over by Khanduri, who had the unenviable task of cleaning BJP's image before the polls.
