London - A revolutionary tray may prevent waiters from being scolded by their employers for breaking dishes and cups.
The Magic Tray keeps plates and cups secured in place using magnets to prevent them from sliding off.
When the tray is picked up and the handles are compressed the magnetic fields become active and it can be tilted up to 45 degrees before the objects on its surface will start to become unstuck.
However, when the Magic Tray is put down the magnetic attraction is broken and the cups and dishes can easily be picked up.
Measuring 22 inches wide and 10 inches in diameter the plywood-made tray can comfortably carry up to two cups and two plates or bowls. Each cup or dish bought with the Magic Tray has a magnetic ring attached to its bottom.
“I felt it was a hindrance for waiters to carry food using normal trays,†the Daily Mail quoted designer Ryan Jongwoo Choi, originally from South Korea but now living in London, as saying.
“The reason why food and drinks will fall or spill is because the center of mass is difficult for people to control while they are moving,†he explained.
“So I implemented a survey for restaurant workers and, based on the results, I tried to find a safer way to transport food and drink. I believe the unique idea I have come up with solves the
problem using the power of magnetism,†he added.
Choi, who is currently studying BA Product Design in Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design in London, hopes to start producing his concept in September this year and has
received interest from retailers in the USA, UK and Korea.
The estimated price of the product will be 50 pounds, with additional cups costing 6 pounds and dishes 10 pounds.
