Apple to issue software update for ‘apps and charger hack’ prone iPhonesLondon - Software giant Apple is planning to issue a software update to its iPhones which were found to be ‘hack-prone’ with certain applications and use of peripherals like chargers.

According to the BBC, Apple’s software update would help its products avoid falling victim to booby-trapped chargers in response to research that created malicious chargers that could upload code onto devices plugged into them.

The bug found by researchers at the Georgia Tech Information Security Centre prompted Apple to prepare an update for devices running iOS 7 and the company’s pending update warns users to be sure they are using a trusted charging point when they plug in.

The updated software will be launched in the autumn and will be part of the beta release for the iOS 7.

Tech news site Ars Technica noted the limited nature of the attack, which requires phones to be unlocked and for attackers to be a registered developer with Apple.

The report added that the update asks users if they are sure they can trust the device they are using to charge their phone or tablet and untrusted devices get no access to the internals of an iOS device.
