The Hague - Dutch football club PSV Eindhoven fired manager Fred Rutten after three consecutive defeats.
Former players Phillip Cocu and Ernest Faber will take over the first team duties for the remainder of the season.
After losing 6-2 at home against FC Twente and 4-2 away against Valencia in the Europa League, PSV suffered its third consecutive defeat Sunday against NAC Breda (3-1). The club dropped to fourth place in the Dutch league.
"We regret the departure of Fred Rutten and have great appreciation for his dedication and commitment," general director Tiny Sanders was quoted as saying by Xinhua.
"We did not see signs of recovery and were unfortunately forced to take this decision. We expect the maximum possible in the remaining matches. We do not expect miracles."
Former FC Twente and Schalke 04 coach Rutten signed as manager of PSV in 2009 and finished third in his first two seasons.
After spending almost 30 million euros on new players last summer the results were yet again disappointing. The 49-year-old had already agreed to leave the club at the end of this season.
