Rio de Janeiro -  Bundesliga club Wolfsburg has reportedly rejected an offer from Flamengo for Brazilian playmaker Diego.

Flamengo's bid for 50 percent of the player's economic rights was rejected by Wolfsburg, which is seeking a "full sale" for $17 million, reported Xinhua.

The Rio de Janeiro club has not given up hope of signing Diego, who has also attracted strong interest from Lokomotiv Moscow.

"If you ask me Flamengo is interested in Diego or not, it's obvious that I will say yes," Flamengo spokesman Michel Levy said. "But I'm not going to say nothing about the details of the  negotiations."

Diego spent last season on loan at Atletico Madrid and played an influential role in the Spanish club's Europe League triumph.

The 27-year-old has made 33 appearances for Brazil since his international debut in 2003.
