London - Britain’s Nicola Adams became the first woman to win gold in Olympic boxing here Thursday, pummelling China’s Ren Cancan in the final of the 51kg event.

Adams won the fight 16-7 against the three-time World Champion Ren.

The British boxer came out swinging in the first round, which she won 4-2, before knocking Ren down in the second as she took a 9-4 lead, which she stretched to 14-5 by the end of the third as Ren struggled to cope.

Marlen Esparza of the US and India's Mary Kom won bronze after losing their semi-finals Wednesday.

Esparza, 23, was defeated 10-8 in the semi-final by Ren, while Kom was thrashed 11-6 in her semi-final by second-seeded Adams.

Women's boxing is making its debut in the Olympics this year. Bouts consist of four two-minute rounds, as opposed to the three three-minute rounds for the men.

Both semi-finals losers are awarded bronze medals, with the semi-final winners battling it out for gold and silver.
