'Realistic' Wenger says 'couldn't afford to keep 200,000 pounds-a-week' Van Persie

London - Arsenal boss Arsene Wenger has defended his decision to sell Robin van Persie, insisting: "We could not pay 200,000 pounds a week."

During Wenger's 16-year reign many stars have gone, but this was his most controversial decision.

The Arsenal boss admitted he did not want to sell to Manchester United, but they were the only ones who came in for the former Gunners captain and a deal was inevitable, as Van Persie wanted out, The Sun reports.

Wenger also revealed the Gunners will not reinvest the 22 million pounds as they have already signed Lukas Podolski, Olivier Giroud and Santi Cazorla.

He said: "We live in the economic reality which other clubs do not. There are some things we cannot afford to do.

"How much do you want to pay? 250k? 300k? You say we do not live in a realistic world and then reproach us when we say we will not pay 250k a week."
