Seemingly unfazed at being ousted from the Asian Athletics Association, scam-tainted Suresh Kalmadi on Monday said losing the presidential re-election bid to Qatar’s Dahlan Jumaan Al-Hamad has actually given him a chance to work at the “grassroots” level.
“I have no issues today and I congratulate Mr Al-Hamad for being elected as President. I am rather relieved that I will be able to work at the grassroots level in athletics,” Mr. Kalmadi said after losing the vote during the ongoing AAA Congress in Pune.

Ranjeet, Malik looking for positives from Davis Cup loss

New Delhi - India's young tennis players Virali Murugesan Ranjeet and Vijayant Malik took positives from their Davis Cup defeats against South Korea, stating the experience will stand in good stead when they next play for the country.

Ranjeet, who went down tamely in the first singles, raised his game by several notches Sunday and went down fighting in the must-win reverse singles 4-6, 4-6, 2-6 against a higher-ranked Suk-Young Jeong that sealed the match in favour of the Koreans.

Ranjeet said he played well by his standards but that doesn't mean that he played badly Friday in the first singles.

"Today I really felt good. I was hitting the ball well. I also played well by my standards on Friday, but my opposition was too good. Today I fought till the last point," said Ranjeet.

The player said that the slow court at the R.K.Khanna Tennis Stadium was suited well for the Koreans. Ranjeet felt a fast court would have worked in favour of the Indians.

"It was as if the Koreans were playing at home. The court is slow and the balls were slow as well. Everything worked in favour of the Koreans. On Friday, there were a few times when I rushed past the ball. But today I adjusted well and gave my best, but still it was not enough," said Ranjeet.

Ranjeet said the last 10 days were great for him, making him richer with experience.

"I have gained lot of experience in the last 10 days. This is the second time I have been a part of the Davis Cup. But this time I go back with lot of experience, having actually played the matches," said Ranjeet.

Malik, who went down 2-6, 4-6 in the fifth dead rubber to Ji Sung Nam, concurred with his team mate and said that the experience will help him when he next plays for India.

"It has been a great experience for me. If I get more such opportunities, I will only get better and do good for the country," said Malik.

Shiv Prakash Misra, non-playing Davis Cup captain, hoped that the stand-off between the top players and the All India Tennis Association (AITA) would be sorted out soon. He hoped the top players will be back in the team for the first round play-off ties against Indonesia that will be held at home April 5-7.

"I think the issue will be sorted out quickly. The AITA had accepted most of their demands and by the next tie that is at home they will be back in the team and we would win it," he said.
