Mumbai, Mon, Jan 25, 2010 (CNN-IBN) - The Navi Mumbai Municipal Corporation (NMMC) says cricketer Sachin Tendulkar is a tax offender.
According to the NMMC Tendulkar is among nearly 75,000 people, including many celebrities and businessmen, who failed to pay vehicle tax.
Tendulkar and singer Shankar Mahadevan are among those who have been issued notices by the corporation for allegedly not paying vehicle tax.
The list of offenders also includes Tripura Governor DY Patil and many big names from the corporate world including Reliance.
The vehicles were reportedly bought in the Navi Mumbai Regional Transport Office region and are being used in Mumbai.
According to NMMC the total dues due to non-payment of vehicle tax is Rs 50 crore. The amount due relates to 1.5 lakh vehicles.
Just about 15 days ago according to a list released by the Union Finance Ministry Tendulkar had paid Rs 1.5 crore for the October-December quarter as income tax.
The cricket superstar was at 115th position among the 500 top tax payers of the country.
