We will get some wins and then celebrate: Ganguly
Monday - Mar 15, 2010, 02:15pm (GMT+5.5)
Mon, Mar 15 2010 (CricBuzz) - Sourav Ganguly was a satisfied man after his side's second consecutive victory in the Indian Premier League 2010. Kolkata, who had a horrendous season in 2009, looked to have begun this one well, and Ganguly said that they were winning because in every match somebody had put his hand up to perform.
"We are playing well in this format of the game and that's what is important. It's important that somebody stands out, that's been happening. Angelo (Mathews) played brilliantly in the last game and today it was Manoj (Tiwary), (Brad) Hodge and Angelo (Mathews) again... Somebody or the other is delivering. That's very good."
Ganguly also said that there was not one over-riding reason for their improved show, but that everything had contributed.
"It's everyone... The staff, the mindset, the atmosphere... everybody makes a difference in the team. That's how a cricket team goes. It's about building an atmosphere. The game is about playing freely. You don't have time, you just got to keep playing shots. That's what we are doing."
Once the other foreign players arrive, Ganguly is likely to have a pleasant problem, since the ones who will be coming are high-quality players, but the current crop of foreigners is also performing very well for Kolkata.
"I pick players according to form... Four of them are top-class international stars whether it's (Brendon) McCullum, (Chris) Gayle, (David) Hussey or (Shane) Bond. We are winning and we will see when they arrive," said Ganguly.
Ganguly was also happy for Manoj Tiwary, whose crucial innings helped Kolkata get off to a flying start.
"He's got the talent. I have always said players like (Cheteshwar) Pujara, Tiwary and (Wriddhiman) Saha are talented. It's a question of giving them opportunities. In this format, the best place to bat is at the top of the order. He played freely, played big shots and set up the game for us. I'm so happy for him. Hopefully, he does well right through the tournament. That will be good for him and good for us as well," he said about Tiwary.
The addition of bowling coach Wasim Akram has made a difference, although the fast bowling great has not had a lot of time to work on the Kolkata pacers.
"He is working with the bowlers. The time is very short. We don't get much practice time because we are travelling and playing. But he speaks to them and hopefully, he will be a part of this franchise for many years. Young boys like Ishant (Sharma), (Ashok) Dinda, Varun Aaron, along with Bond and Langeveldt, will get a lot of help as far as bowling is concerned," Ganguly said.
When asked how they planned to celebrate, Ganguly signed off with, "First year we had a lot of celebration! The hangover is still there! Hopefully, we will get some more wins and then celebrate."
