London - Ryan Giggs’ father has revealed that he spent 20 years deceiving his pals about his relationship with the footballer in a bid to portray him as the perfect son.
Danny Wilson told his friends that he was present at all United’s greatest triumphs thanks to his generous boy.
However, Ryan did not send him any tickets and he watched all the matches on TV.
He took days off from work and hid in his house so they would not suspect the rift between them.
Wilson even paid the bus driver who ferried United’s Cardiff fan club to games to buy him match programmes so he could convince friends he’d been there.
“I lived a lie to make Ryan look like the perfect son,” the Daily Star quoted him as saying.
“Looking back I can’t believe the lengths I went to. I just wanted people to think that I was sharing in my boy’s triumphs.
“I had people coming up to me asking for autographs and relatives of sick children asking me for signed shirts. I always said I’d see what I could do.
“But I knew there was no chance.
“Ryan just did not want to know me and is so tight. When he came out with my friends for a few beers he would not buy a round.
“He said: ‘Dad, I don’t carry money. I don’t need it.’
“I sent him to a cashpoint.
“After all that has happened now I’m not protecting him any more.
“I want to apologise to everyone I misled over the years.
“I was protecting my son. But he has relied on that protection from so many people, lived off it and abused it,” he added.
