Ex-Beatle McCartney slams Team GB 'idiots' for not picking 'Brit hero' Beckham

London -  Former Beatle singer Sir Paul McCartney has expressed exasperation over football star David Beckham's non-inclusion in the Team GB football squad for the London  Olympics, branding Team GB officials 'idiots'.

McCartney, who will sing at the opening ceremony of the London Games, spoke out amid last gasp calls for Beckham's inclusion in the team.

"He's a national hero. I would've thought Beckham would be first choice because of his huge contribution to getting the Olympics. But some idiot decided otherwise," The Sun quoted  McCartney, as saying.

"I feel a bit sorry for the three over-23s, because we're going to be looking at them and saying, 'That should've been Beckham.' He's a national hero, a crowd-puller," he added.

The former Manchester United star Beckham, who played a vital role in Lord Coe's team that won the Games for Britain, was very enthusiastic to captain Team GB.

McCartney further said: "It would've been great for him to lead out our British football team. But some person somewhere said, 'So-and-so's playing better.' Like it matters."

Meanwhile, a Team GB source has confirmed former Team GB coach Stuart Pearce would not be moved by McCartney's plea.

The source said: "It doesn't matter if Paul McCartney, the Queen and every star in Hollywood has their say. Stuart Pearce has picked his team and that's it."
