Sana’a - Yemen's Defence Ministry on Friday announced that the US-born radical Yemeni cleric Anwar al-Awlaki, head of al Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, has been killed by Yemeni forces.
"The terrorist Anwar al-Awlaki has been killed along with some of his companions," it said in a statement sent by text message to journalists.
Yemeni security officials said that there was an airstrike on Friday morning in the country's east, between al-Jawf and Marib regions. The officials could not provide more details and spoke on condition of anonymity because they are not authorised to talk to the media.
Tribal elders in the area say the airstrike targeted an al Qaeda convoy in the east. The elders could not say if there were casualties.
The United States had civil engineer-turned radical Muslim cleric, who found refuge in Yemen, on a kill-or-capture list.
The United States also named him a "specially designated global terrorist".
He had been implicated in a botched attempt to bomb a US-bound plane in 2009, the US Army base killings in Fort Hood, Texas, and a failed bombing in New York's Times Square.
