Yashwant Sinha demands PM's resignation over passage of Lokpal BillNew Delhi - Soon after the Lok Sabha passed the much-anticipated Lokpal Bill to create an anti-corruption body, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader Yashwant Sinha said Prime Minister Manmohan Singh should immediately resign from his post and leave office as the manner in which the Bill was passed was incorrect.

Talking to mediapersons after emerging out of the Lok Sabha, Sinha said: "The manner in which the Constitutional amendment Bill relating to the Lokpal has fared and failed in Lok Sabha represents the monumental inefficiency of this government."

"I had said in my speech in Lok Sabha that the Prime Minister spoke as he was making his farewell speech, indeed it was his farewell speech because if they have any morality left, they should quit, they should leave the government because they could muster a simple majority of 273 in Lok Sabha," he added.

He also said that the government deliberately failed to present a strong and effective Bill as promised earlier.

Sinha further said that the government has lost its majority in the house and that is why it failed to get the constitutional status.

"The responsibility for getting the constitutional amendment bill passed rested with the government not with the opposition and the government miserably failed to carry that constitutional amendment.

Therefore, because the government does not enjoy even a simple majority in this house, this government has lost all moral right to continue in office," he added.

Meanwhile, BJP leader Ananth Kumar also slammed the government by saying that government didn't have the intention to bring a strong Bill and therefore introduced a weak Bill.

"UPA government has failed to get constitutional right in the Lok Sabha, as for this we were called specially but in the special session they had lost its majority. Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee, who is leader of the house, said that he will run the government till they have 273, now what Mukherjee has to say about it. We wanted a strong Lokpal Bill to get introduced but the government attempted to bring a weak Bill," said Kumar.

The Lok Sabha passed the much-anticipated Lokpal Bill on Tuesday to create an anti-corruption body. However, it failed to give it a constitutional status.

The Bill will be presented to the  Rajya Sabha, where the government coalition does not have a majority.
