Baby Falak taken off ventilator, improvement in healthNew Delhi - Two-year-old Falak, who has been battling for life after being cruelly beaten and bitten by a teenage girl, has been taken off the ventilator and is showing signs of improvement, doctors at the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) said Friday.

"Her condition has shown slight improvement. We took her off the ventilator Friday morning around 6 a.m and she is responding positively to the antibiotics being administered. She continues to be critical, but is stable," M.C. Misra, chief of the AIIMS trauma centre, said.

Falak opens her eyes and blinks, but is unconscious, the doctors said.

According to the team of doctors monitoring her condition, the septicemia, an infection in the blood which can spread to vital organs, affecting her is now better as Falak is responding positively to the strong antibiotics.

"After checking her blood parameters we can say that her septicemia problem might be responding positively to the antibiotics. Her vital organs like kidney, lungs and liver are better," Deepak Agrawal, assistant professor, neurosurgery, at the Trauma Centre told IANS.

The doctors said that pus had accumulated in Falak's brain cavity, which has been removed.

"The baby's brain cavity had accumulated pus, we removed it with the help of a needle. If pus accumulates again, we might think of another life-saving surgery. We have already sent sample of the pus for a culture test," Agrawal said.

Falak was brought to AIIMS Jan 18, with severe head injuries and bite marks all over her face, by a 14-year-old girl who is now in a juvenile home.

Battling chest, brain and blood infections, she is being fed through a tube.

Four people have been arrested in the case.
