Aleppo attack a nail in Assad’s coffin: PanettaAboard A US Military Plane - Reacting to the Syrian government forces attack on Aleppo, US Defence Secretary Leon Panetta said that Syrian President Bashar al-Assad's assault on Aleppo will be "a nail in his coffin".

"What Assad has been doing to his own people and what he continues to do to his own people makes clear that his regime is coming to an end. It's lost all legitimacy," Panetta said at the start of a five-day Middle East tour.

Panetta added, "It's no longer a question of whether he's coming to an end, it's when."

Fearing for their safety, around 200,000 civilians caught in the cross-fire between the Syrian government and the rebel fighters have fled the city, UN Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos said.

"It is not known how many people remain trapped in places where fighting continues," Amos said. Those who have been unable to flee the city are facing severe power cuts and food shortages and taking shelters in schools and other public buildings.

According to reports, the civilians have fled to neighboring towns while others have crossed over to the Turkish border.
