Obama would win with 271 electoral votes if election held today: Analysis

Obama would win with 271 electoral votes if election held today: AnalysisWashington - US President Barack Obama would win with at least 271 electoral votes, with likely victories in Ohio and Iowa, along with 19 other states and the District of Columbia, if elections were held today, according to an analysis.

The analysis shows that Republican candidate Mitt Romney would win 23 states for a total of 206 electoral votes.

Obama is within reach of the 270 electoral votes needed to win a second term, whereas Romney’s path to victory is narrowing, the analysis by Associated Press shows.

To overtake Obama, Romney would need to quickly gain the upper hand in nearly all of the nine states where he and Obama are competing the hardest.

According to the Huffington Post, polls show Obama has a steady lead in many of the states as Romney looks to shift the dynamics of the race, starting with their first debate on Wednesday in Denver.

“We'd rather be us than them,” Jennifer Psaki, an Obama spokeswoman, said.

But Romney’s running mate Paul Ryan said that there was still time for the GOP ticket to win.

According to the analysis, Romney would need to win in Florida, Colorado, Nevada, North Carolina, New Hampshire and Virginia and topple Obama in either Ohio or Iowa, to have a realistic chance of winning the elections.
