Suicide car bomber struck a Catholic church in NigeriaAbuja - A suicide car bomber struck a Catholic church holding Mass in a northern Nigerian city Sunday, killing or wounding several people.

Officials said the blast took place at St Rita's church situated in the city of Kaduna, scene of many sectarian attacks.

According to BBC, several people were killed or wounded in the explosion.

The blast was caused by at least one vehicle being driven towards the church loaded with explosives, witnesses said.

Police and soldiers surrounded the church after the blast.

The explosion occurred while Mass was going on in the church, a witness told a news agency.

No group has claimed responsibility for the blast, but such attacks are often blamed on the Boko Haram militant group, which has threatened to install Islamic government in the oil-rich African country.

In June, Boko Haram attacked three churches in Kaduna. At least 50 people were killed in the bombings and the reprisals that followed.
