U.S treatment of diplomat atrocious, apology is must: Manish Tewari

New Delhi – Union Information and Broadcasting Minister Manish Tewari on Friday said the United States of America authorities have behaved atrociously with Indian diplomat Devyani Khobragade.  He wanted the United States to make good its actions.

“The fact is that the American authorities have behaved atrociously with an Indian diplomat, and obviously America has to make good its actions. I think it is a legitimate expectation for them to come forth and apologise,” said Tewari.

“There is no tussle between India and the United States. All attempts must be made by the United States of America to ensure that life, liberty and dignity of our diplomats abroad, are protected and preserved,” he said.

He added that the minimum demand made by India needs to be done by the U.S. “No country will tolerate this sort of treatment to its diplomat,” he added.

A 1999 batch IFS officer, Devyani Khobragade, India’s Deputy Consul General in New York, was arrested on December 12 by the State Department’s diplomatic security bureau, and then handed over to the U.S. Marshals Service (USMS).

Khobragade was taken into custody as she was dropping her daughter to school before being released on a US$ 250,000 bond after pleading not guilty in court.
