Costa Rica’s win over Greece was the 24th time a tie at the finals had been decided on penalties – here we look back at the history of shootouts at the World Cup
Costa Rica’s 5-3 win over Greece was the 24th time a tie in the World Cup finals had been decided on penalties (since they were introduced in 1978).
It is unlikely to be the last game to be decided by that method in Brazil. Three more shootouts would break the record of four, at each of the finals in 1990 and 2006.
Germany have won all four of their shoot-outs since 1978, while Argentina and Brazil have won three of their four. England, famously, have lost all three, in 1990, 1998 and 2006.
How many of these can you remember?
