Jacques Kallis has given up on his World Cup dream and is retiring from all international cricket.

The 38-year-old South Africa all-rounder, who targeted next year’s World Cup as his final swansong, said in a statement he realizes that is “a bridge too far.”

Kallis retired from tests and Twenty20s late last year but remained available for one-day internationals, and was keen to win the 2015 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand 20 years after making his international debut.

But Kallis said he came to the decision to give up internationals completely on the just-completed tour of Sri Lanka, where he made scores of 0, 1 and 4 in the ODI series and didn’t bowl. He announced his decision on Wednesday, saying “I just knew on that tour that I was done.”
