Argentina’s world No. 46 Leonardo Mayer captured his first ATP title on Sunday when he fought back to defeat top-seeded Spaniard David Ferrer, 6-7(3), 6-1, 7-6(4) in the bet-at-home Open final.

Mayer becomes the lowest-ranked winner of an ATP World Tour 500 tournament since number 54 Radek Stepanek clinched the Washington title in 2011.

The 27-year-old Mayer is enjoying one of the best spells of his career. Last month, the right-hander advanced to the fourth round at Wimbledon and made his first ATP World Tour final in Vina del Mar earlier this year.

“I can’t believe it,” said Mayer”

Tomic downs Karlovic

At Bogota, Australia’s Bernard Tomic claimed his second career title and secured a return to the world top 100 when he beat defending champion Ivo Karlovic 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(4) in the Colombia Open final.

The 21-year-old Tomic, whose rollercoaster career took another twist when he split with global management company IMG last week, defied the 39 aces of Karlovic to take victory in two hours and 13 minutes. It was his second tour-level title, adding to a 2013 triumph at the Sydney International.

Tomic is also the first Australian champion in South America since Ken Rosewall triumphed in Buenos Aires in 1968.

Wozniacki’s 22nd title

Meanwhile, top seed Caroline Wozniacki won her first title of the year and 22nd of her career on Sunday when she defeated second-seeded Italian Roberta Vinci 6-1, 6-1 in the Istanbul WTA TEB BNP Paribas Cup final.

Barthel wins Swedish Open

In Bastad, Germany’s Mona Barthel won her third career title on Sunday when she claimed the WTA Swedish Open with a 6-3, 7-6(3) win over South Africa’s Chanelle Scheepers.

The results (finals): In Hamburg: ATP bet-at-home Open: Leonardo Mayer bt David Ferrer 6-7(3), 6-1, 7-6(4).

In Bogota: ATP Colombia Open: Bernard Tomic bt Ivo Karlovic 7-6(5), 3-6, 7-6(4).
