General Information - Bermuda

Background Bermuda is an archipelago consisting of seven main islands and about 130 smaller islands and islets lying about 1 000 kilometers (650 mi.) east of Washington D.C. USA. Some five hundred years ago, Spanish explorer, Juan de Bermudez, discovered the isolated archipelago, but he made no attempt to land. In the early 17th-century British colonists arrived and in 1620 Bermuda became a self-governing colony. Today Bermuda is a diversified community, consisting of numerous nationalities and ethnic groups, about 55% of Bermudians are of African descent. Bermuda has developed into a highly successful offshore financial center and has one of the highest per capita incomes in the world, the economy is based primarily upon international business and tourism.
