General Information - Montserrat

Background The former crown colony is today British overseas territory. The Volcanic island in the Caribbean Sea, southeast of Puerto Rico, contains seven active volcanoes and has been inhabited by Arawaks and Carib people. When Christopher Columbus discovered the island in 1493, he claimed it for Spain. In 1632 the island fell under British control. Due to the eruption of the Soufriere Hills volcano that began on 18 July 1995, much of the island has been devastated and two-thirds of the population has fled abroad .
