Jaitley meets PM Modi, Amit Shah amid raging Lalitgate
Amid the raging row over two top BJP leaders helping scam-tainted former IPL chief Lalit Modi, Finance Minister Arun Jaitley on Friday separately met Prime Minister Narendra Modi and party president Amit Shah. While no details of the two meetings were available, it is being speculated that the subject of the meetings were allegations being faced by External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj and Rajasthan Chief Minister Vasundhara Raje.
TV news channels reported the meetings assumed significance as the BJP had been studying the documents that allegedly nailed Raje.
The Rajasthan Chief Minister has been accused of giving a signed testimony in favour of Modi’s immigration application in the United Kingdom.
Also, her son, Dushyant Singh, has been accused of receiving huge sums from Lalit Modi as part of a dubious share sale.
Raje is reported to have admitted to the BJP leadership that her signature on the statement is genuine and that the affidavit was given in personal capacity.
Swaraj, meanwhile, was accused of helping Modi secure travel documents from the UK for visiting Portugal to take care of his ailing wife. The minister had defended herself saying the help was extended on “humanitarian grounds”.
The Opposition, however, alleged quid pro quo saying her husband and daughter had represented Modi in courts.
The party has so far defended the two leaders with Home Minister Rajnath Singh saying the two leaders won’t resign.
The PM, however, has so far maintained silence on the controversy.
