The country stares at an impending drought with widespread monsoon failure being a cause of deep concern. In contrast parts of Punjab, the granary of India may actually end up growing more food grain than normal monsoon years, this startling claim was made by B S Dhillon, vice chancellor, of the Punjab Agriculture University, this university pioneered the first Green Revolution. Speaking to NDTV’s Science Editor Pallava Bagla, the noted agriculture scientist said farmers in Punjab will use ground water to over come the rain deficit, so that cost of production will go up but the yield will not come down, India is well placed to handle droughts as it has done in the last decade.
