Lord Krishna is also known as Shyam, described as the color of the sky just before night falls, a colour best described as indigo. In Hindi, indigo translates as ‘neel’. The root for ‘indigo’ comes from the Greek word for dye, ‘indikon’ or ‘coming from India’, as the tree from which the colour is harvested – Indigofera tinctoria – is native to India. New age psychology also reads into indigo as a symbolism of a certain clairvoyance. In the traditional chakra system of yoga, indigo is the ‘ajna chakra’, the site of the ‘third eye’.
