In Assam, the tradition of flag-making is being carried on by a group of nine women employed by the state Khadi Board. These women who come from poor and lower middle class families have been making flags since 1980. The Assam Khadi and Village Industries Board is the northeast’s one and only government agency which supplies the flags throughout the region. These women earn anywhere between Rs 6-21 depending on the size of the flag. But they are willing to continue this sacred task even after knowing that it does not fetch them handsome wages.
