The Buck Stops Here: Over a decade after bloody communal clashes ravaged Gujarat, Chief Minister Narendra Modi spoke out for the first time on his personal experience of the riots. Mr Modi said he “suffered in silence” as he was accused of causing the deaths of his “loved ones” and described himself as “shaken” by the riots. And while this is the closest Mr Modi has come to expressing remorse for the riots, he stopped short of expressing outright regret. The BJP has hailed Mr Modi’s statement, which comes in the wake of a court decision that clears the Gujarat Chief Minister of all charges relating to the riots. But for critics of Mr Modi, is this enough? We discuss.
