Save the dog, save the tiger

What does the domestic dog have to do with saving India’s wild tigers? Canine distemper, a viral disease found in dogs, can be transmitted to wild cats with fatal consequences. And Tigers have been found to have contracted the same disease. The National Tiger Conservation Authority (NTCA) had instructed states to take measures to prevent this from happening. Now, a project is underway to vaccinate all the dogs in over 100 villages on the outskirts of the Bandipur National Park in Karnataka, which is home to many of India’s tigers. Maya Sharma reports.
