Somnath’s AAP different? ‘Action on minister will reveal if it is’
As social media fiercely debated Arvind Kejriwal’s activist-style two-day sit-in demanding action against five cops accused of not cooperating when Law Minister Somnath Bharti led a vigilante-style raid against some Africans accused of running a drug and prostitution racket in a south Delhi colony. The protest was part of a larger demand by AAP to seek control of Delhi Police which currently lies with the Centre. But with two cops now sent on extended leave pending inquiry, there is outrage in social media, even among some of AAP’s fiercest supporters, to now act against Mr Bharti who now faces allegations of racism, vigilantism, misogyny and using abusive language. So far, the party is silent on the allegations. For a party that staked its claim to power on the plank that its politics is different from other parties, will it be able to face allegations of double standards? The party is now under critical watch as people wait to see if and what action is taken against its leader.
