Getting Around Kolkata
Human-Pulled Rickshaws, Trams add to the old world charm of this city.
The choices available for transportation somehow match the age-old charm and the glory of Kolkata from the bygone era. Nowhere else in India would one find human-drawn rickshaws, the slow-moving trams.
Rickshaws
A trip on the human-powered rickshaws that ply in Kolkata is a memorable experience. Although there are talks
to eliminate this kind of transportation, it is still a common sight especially around Chowringee. A travel on one of these allows you ample opportunity to take in the sights and sounds of Kolkata. Fares for the
human-pulled rickshaws shoot up in the monsoon season.
Trams
Kolkata Tramways is the only tram service in India. Certainly an eventful way to explore the city, from the
Maidan Terminus, trams run north to Belgachia and south to Tollygunge. The trams are crowded during the rush
hour.
Metro Rail
Kolkata's metro rail is India's first underground rail system. It offers a clean, fast and hassle free travel.
Trains run from north to south every 10-15 mins and tickets are priced at Rs. 4-8.
Taxis
The yellow-painted ambassador cars are a common sight in this bustling metropolis. Take a ride on one of these
and explore the various destinations in the city.
Bus
Kolkata has an extensive network of buses connecting various places of the city. It is definitely the cheapest
way to travel within the city but certainly not the most desirable way to travel. Air-conditioned buses are
also available on select routes from near the airport.
Shared Autorickshaws are yet another option. For some of the best views of the Howrah Bridge, ferries are a
great option. They take you across the Hooghly River.
