Inching towards Rs. 100 a kg, onions make India weep

Onions, a staple of most Indian dinner tables, is inching towards Rs. 100 a kilo in the festival season, and the Centre suspects hoarding is one of the reasons. Traders in many cities blamed the sharp rise in onion prices on excessive rain, which has ruined crops in Maharashtra, a major onion supplier. Onions are also in limited supply from other producers like Gujarat, Karnataka and Andhra Pradesh.
