Hero in a Distant Island Lieutenant Ved Prakash Trehan
Period : 1962 UN Peace keeping in CongoIn March 1962, the 4 Rajputana rifles, which included Lieutenant Ved Prakash Trehan was a part of the UN forces deployed in Congo to end hostilities in that country. On the 29th December the lieutenant led a patrol to locate enemy positions. Proceeding through dense jungle, he suddenly found himself within a 100 metres of enemy trenches. The enemy opened fire with machine guns. The Indians were in unfamiliar territory and soon found themselves surrounded. The Lieutenant led his men in a fierce charge and broke through the enemy ranks. But he was mortally wounded in the process and died soon after.
