Commander In The Skies Wing Commander Talwar

Period : 1971 Indo- Pak war

Wing Commander Talwar commanded a bomber squadron based in Agara, in the 1971 Indo-Pak war. His were to attack pre-determined targets deep within Pakistani territory in the event of a Pakistani air strike.

Late at night on 3rd December, the Pakistanis began a series of air raids on Agra, but the well-prepared. Wing Commander was able to repeal the enemy squadron, with minimal damage to the runway.

An hour after the attack, Wing Commander Talwar's squadron began their retaliatory measures against Pakistan. The Commander led 5 missions into Pakistan, targeting enemy in damaging the air installations at Sargodha.

The next day, he launched a daring daylight attack against four enemy gun positions to help the Indian Army advance in the inhospitable Chhamb region. He effectively silenced three positions and facilitated the Indian advance in that region.

For his planning, leadership abilities and impressive flying skills, Wing Commander, Talwar was awarded the Mahavir Chakra.
