Sailor to the Rescue Seaman Chanam Singh

Period : 1971 Indo- Pak war

On the 8th of December 1971, during the Indo-Pak war, an advance commando force was organised to attack Pakistan targets in Mongia and Khulna in the eastern sector. Leading Seaman Chanan Singh sailed in the INS Padma to assist this crucial commando operation.

As the commandos began infiltrating Khulana, they came under heavy enemy fire. The Gunboat carrying Chanan Singh was struck directly and soon began to sink. Though seriously wounded, Singh managed to swim ashore. Then turning round he saw two survivors of the boat struggling frantically for their lives in the water. Whitout a thought for his own safety. Singh jumped into the waters and guided them to the shore.

To help the injured men make good their escape, Singh rushed towards the enemy soldiers and succeeded in drawing their attention towards him. He was struck several times and finally taken prisoner of war.

On his release after the ceasefire, Leading Seaman Chanan Singh was decorated with Mahavir Chakra.
