Unflinching Defence Subhedar Ajit Singh

Period : 1965 Indo Pak War

During 1965 Indo-Pak war, the 4 Sikh Regiment was assigned the task of capturing the village of Barkhi in Lahore, Pakistan, Subedar Ajit Singh and others of his battalion commenced their advance on September 6. On the way, they demolished several enemy outposts.

They launched their assault when they had reached within 380 meters of Bakri. However a well positioned Pakistani machine gun held up their advance. Subedar Singh was given the responsibility of destroying the gun . He charged at the enemy position . A burst of machine gun fire wounded him in the chest but he carried on defiantly and went near enough to throw a grenade that effectively silenced the machine gun. His gallantry inspired his comrades and they routed the enemy but the Subedar succumbed to his injuries.

For his skill and expert marshalling of resources, Major Roy was awarded the Mahavir Chakra in 1965.

He was posthumously honoured with the MAHAVIR CHAKRA.
