Major Earthquake Hits Eastern Indonesia, Causing Deaths and Damage
A powerful magnitude-7.7 earthquake struck off the coast of Indonesia’s eastern Flores region on Friday, triggering an initial tsunami warning and causing significant damage and casualties. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the epicenter was situated approximately 68 kilometers (42 miles) north-northwest of Ende city in East Nusa Tenggara province. Initial reports from the affected areas indicate at least 20 fatalities and multiple injuries, with rescue operations underway amidst challenging conditions across the vast archipelago.
The port town of Maumere, located in Sikka Regency on Flores Island, bore the brunt of the immediate impact. Fathur Rahman, head of the city’s rescue agency, confirmed that 20 people had died, six were injured, and two individuals remained trapped under debris. Eyewitness accounts from residents of Sikka regency described widespread destruction, with numerous buildings sustaining damage. Yohanna Embu, a local resident, recounted seeing the waiting room at the Pelni port terminal in Maumere completely collapsed. Further inland, students attending morning Mass at St. Peter Major Seminary in Sikka were forced to flee in panic when the roof of an assembly hall gave way. The seminary’s rector, Rev. Guidelbertus Tanga, noted that at least one priest suffered a broken leg after leaping from a second-story building during the tremors. Hospitals across the island also saw patients evacuated as a precautionary measure, with medical staff setting up temporary outdoor treatment areas to adapt to the emergency.
Rescue teams are facing considerable obstacles in reaching all affected zones, particularly Nagekeo, the region closest to the earthquake’s epicenter. Communication signals in Nagekeo have been severely disrupted, hindering efforts to assess the full extent of the damage and casualties. Attempts to reach the area by road were thwarted by landslides, necessitating an alternative approach. Officials stated that another team was attempting to access Nagekeo via ferry, highlighting the logistical difficulties inherent in responding to a disaster in Indonesia’s geographically diverse archipelago.
Following the shallow undersea quake, Indonesian authorities promptly issued a tsunami warning for coastal areas in East Nusa Tenggara, West Nusa Tenggara, South Sulawesi, and Southeast Sulawesi provinces. Residents were urged to evacuate beaches and riverbanks and seek higher ground as a precaution. The initial warning underscored the potential for destructive waves, given the earthquake’s proximity to populated coastlines. However, Australia’s tsunami warning center later clarified that the event posed no tsunami threat to the Australian mainland, its islands, or territories. The powerful main tremor was subsequently followed by at least two aftershocks, adding to the anxiety of residents.

In December 1992, a magnitude 7 earthquake generated a powerful tsunami that claimed approximately 2,500 lives on the southeastern island of Flores, which is part of the same group of islands affected by Friday’s event. That disaster served as a stark reminder of the destructive potential of such natural phenomena in the region.
This incident in Indonesia occurs amidst a period of heightened global seismic activity. Earlier in the week, on Monday, a magnitude 7.4 earthquake caused extensive damage in western Colombia. Furthermore, in June, a series of back-to-back earthquakes, measuring magnitudes 7.2 and 7.5, resulted in the deaths of over 6,000 people in Venezuela, according to government statistics. These recent events underscore the global prevalence and potential impact of powerful seismic activity.
