The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) is likely to examine Tata Sons’ former chairman Ratan Tata and its current chief Cyrus Mistry in connection with preliminary enquiries into the intercepted communications of corporate lobbyist Niira Radia.

Sources said though the CBI has so far not found any criminality in its enquiries, but it will seek clarification from Tata and Mistry over some references in the tapped conversations.

The enquiries relate to the supply of low-floor buses by Tata Motors to the Tamil Nadu government under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission scheme of the Central government and the allotment of iron ore mines in Singhbhum district of Jharkhand to Tata Steel.

Besides Tata and Mistry, executives of Reliance, Unitech and Tata Motors have also been examined by the CBI in connection with its enquiries. The CBI registered 14 preliminary enquiries into alleged corruption arising in the communications with Radia, intercepted by the Income Tax department.

Last year, the Supreme Court identified 23 issues that were framed by a team appointed by it following an analysis of conversations between Radia and bureaucrats, politicians, corporate tycoons and scribes. The court also referred one of the issues to the Chief Vigilance Officer of the mines department for investigation and another to the Chief Justice.

The conversations between Radia and her associates suggest that elements used corrupt means to secure favours from government officers, who allegedly acted for extraneous considerations.
