Sydney – Indian-origin surgeon Jayant Patel, accused of the manslaughter of three patients in Australia, has walked a free man from court.

The 63-year-old former Bundaberg-based surgeon has escaped further jail time for fraudulently registering as a doctor in Queensland.

According to the Brisbane Times, it is expected he will soon return to the United States.

After Dr Patel pleaded guilty to four charges of fraud when he worked as a senior medical officer in Queensland, Judge Terry Martin sentenced him to two years’ imprisonment, to be wholly suspended, the report said.

Outside court Dr Patel thanked his supporters and his legal team, saying he was looking forward to returning to his family and work in the U.S.

Patel added that it has been a long and very difficult journey from him, adding that he is pleased it’s over and he will be going back to his work and life.
