Karaga Festival
Celebrated in the month of March or April, this is one of the oldest and the most important festival in
Bangalore. Members of the Tigala community celebrate the festival marked by fire walking and frenzied dancing.
Men carry earthen pots or karaga on their heads in a nightlong procession before immersing them in the Sampangi
Tank. Young men brandishing swords accompany the Karaga carrier.
Kadalekeya Parishe
The Peanut Festival falls every year in the month of November and is held at the Bull Temple. Farmers offer
their first groundnut crop of the year and seek blessings of God.
Makara Sankranti
Held in January every year, the festival marks the beginning of the harvest season. It also signifies a change in season from winter to spring.
Dusshera
The royal tradition of a grand procession, which started during the time of the Vijayanagara Empire, still
continues till date. The ten days of festivities culminates in a huge and colourful procession carrying Goddess
Bhuvaneshwari.
Varamahalakshmi
On this auspicious day in August married women offer garlands, cash, jewellery to Goddess Lakshmi, the Hindu
Goddess for wealth and prosperity and seek her blessings for the long life of their husbands. It is a tradition
to offer vermillion or kum-kum to atleast five married women.
