History of Hyderabad

The indelible impression of the Nizams helped shape Hyderabad, as we know it today

The fifth largest metropolis in India, Hyderabad boasts of a 400- year old history. Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi Dynasty, founded the city in 1586. Set up on the banks of the Musi River, it was meant to alleviate the Qutb Shahi dynasty of the water shortage that they had experienced at their earlier base at the Golconda Fort.

Mughal rule came to Hyderabad when Aurangazeb captured the city in 1687. Asaf Jah I who was granted the title of the Nizam-Ul-Mulk or the Governor of the country defeated a rival officer to gain control of Hyderabad. The Asaf Jahi Dynasty succeeded the Mughals. Asaf Jah's successors ruled as Nizams till a year after India's Independence.
