Shopping In Ladakh

The main shopping areas in Leh include the Old Tibetan Market just off Leh Road for clothes and Moti Market near the Leh Bus Stand.

The markets in Leh are flooded with small gift items, curios and souvenirs. The cold terrain makes it a big market for woolen products including the famous Pashmina. You can adorn yourself in a Pashmina shawl, stole or other garments. Woolen Caps, Gloves, Socks, Sweaters are popular buy in Leh.

Tibetan handicraft items including Buddhist Masks, Prayer Wheels, cymbals with religious motifs, silverware, decorative copper and brass trumpets, shell bangles, Thangka Paintings are a favorite with shoppers. Leh is also an excellent place to buy precious and semi-precious stones. The markets stock Turquoise from Tibet, Rubies from Burma, Lapis Lazuli from Afghanistan among others.

Handwoven rugs, carpets with dragons made on them or with geometric designs are also very popular.

Apricots and Apricot Oil known to be an effective pain reliever are also very popular with tourists.

Some of the popular shopping venues include the Ladakh Art Palace, Tibetan Handicraft Emporium, Ladakh Environment and Health Organisation on the Main Bazaar Road. Cottage Industries Exposition, Women's Alliance and the Ecology Centre in Changspa and Tibetan Handicraft Community Showroom in Choglamsar.
