History of Udaipur

The descendents of the Sun God - The Sisodias ruled Mewar.

Udaipur was the capital city of the Rajput kingdom of Mewar. The Ranawats of the Sisodia Clan occupied power in the early days. Maharana Udai Singh founded the city in 1599.

Legends abound the origins of this land. It is said that Maharana Udai Singh chanced upon a hermit at the foot of the Aravallis who asked him to build his capital there; it was at this place that Udaipur was established.

The Sisodias fought hard against the Mughals and thwarted attempts by them to capture the city. Infact, Udaipur remained untouched by Mughal religious and architectural influence till the coming in of the British.

Udaipur became a princely state under British rule in 1818.

In 1947 after India gained independence the then Maharaja of Udaipur acceded to the Government of India and Udaipur became a part of Rajasthan.
