Udaipur is a city steeped in tradition and appropriately the variety of items that are available for shoppers is in line with its rich culture and history.

Ride on a tonga (a horse-driven carriage) or a rickshaw to one of the bustling markets in Udaipur. The area around the City Palace, Jagdish Temple, Lalghat and Gangaur Ghat is where the busy markets in the city are located.

Udaipur is famous for traditional Rajasthani artifacts including paintings, marble carvings, metal furniture, silver jewellery, dress materials, rugs, carpets etc. The miniature paintings that are unique to Udaipur are available on cloth, canvas, stone and wood. Om Arts near Sahelion ki Bari is a great place to pick up these paintings from the Mewar School. Hand crafted wooden toys are another specialty of Udaipur. Also famous is the Block Printed, Batik and the tie and dye sarees and fabrics, a must buy on a trip to Udaipur. Pichwais or pigment painted temple hangings are another by if you are keen on taking a slice of Rajasthani art with you. One good place to buy Pichwais is at the Molalla Village near Nathdwara.

Locally owned shops to state owned emporium sell these items. Rajasthali and Sadhana Emporium are government owned stores and buying here would mean that you could forget the hassle of haggling and being unsure if you bought the genuine stuff. Some of the noted shops in the courtyard beyond Tripolia Gate are Anokhi, Aashka and Mystique. Shilpgram or the Crafts Village is another indispensable place of visit. The crafts village comes alive during the festival times in the middle of December.
